Leadership Options within the JLP and PNP as Perceived by Jamaicans 

The data show that Christopher Tufton and Audley Shaw are leadership options within the JLP.  

Christopher Tufton is the favourite:

Seen by 17 persons as one of the core reasons for liking the JLP 

o

Has the second highest frequency under the category ‘Other politicians that you like 

other than your MP/Caretaker’ (7 including both JLP and PNP respondents) 

o

Rated by Jamaicans for:

Tax reform suggestions (UM respondents only)

Genuinely friendly and listens

Participatory style – rather than autocratic

BUT – “succumbs to JLP positions under pressure – lacks the will to oppose his own 

party when they are wrong – could be a sign of strength – but maybe too much ‘Mr. 

Nice Guy’ to lead the JLP.” 

Audley Shaw (JLP):

Seen by 7 respondents as a skillful negotiator, with good leadership skills – “always 

come to the rescue of the party when it is attacked by Comrades.”

Is listed among ‘Other politicians that you like other than your MP/Caretaker’

Respected by his constituency  

The data show the PNP with a single option to Portia Simpson‐Miller: Peter Phillips

Accounts for 8% (42 respondents) of the primary reason persons will vote for the PNP in 

the upcoming election. This impact is similar to that of the party’s Leader.

MP/Caretaker’

He is rated by Jamaicans for:
