PNP, JLP Confident Of Victory Ahead Of Polls

The island’s two major political parties say they are confident of victory as they head into tomorrow’s local government election.

Campaigning has ended for the nearly 500 candidates who have been nominated to contest the 228 parish council divisions in tomorrow’s election.

General secretary of the People’s National Party (PNP) Peter Bunting, says the party has maintained the organisation which led to its sweep of the December 29 general election and is therefore “fairly” confident of victory at the polls tomorrow.

He says while he does not expect the party to sweep the divisions, he expects the PNP to take control of the majority of the 14 councils, including the Portmore Municipal Council.

And the Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) general secretary, Aundre Franklin says the party is expecting a good turnout for tomorrow’s elections that should result in its success at the polls.

He says the party’s face to face meetings with the electorate should yield more positive results following its defeat in the December 29 general election.

Meanwhile, the police have issued a warning to supporters of both political parties that they will be prosecuting motorists and other persons who disobey the Road Traffic Act.

In a release this morning, the police warned motorists that they will not tolerate passengers protruding from or sitting on top of motor vehicles. The police are also urging drivers to obey the speed limit and desist from dangerous and reckless driving.
