EOJ ready for local government polls

It appears the Portia Simpson Miller administration has not yet made enquiries about the readiness of the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) to hold the local government polls.

The local government elections, which have been postponed twice, are due by the end of March.

And the director of Elections Orette Fisher says the EOJ has received 100 million dollars to start preparations for the polls.

He says he anticipates that the government will approach the EOJ to find out the state of readiness of the office to hold elections.

But he would not be willing to comment when those final consultations are made.
The government usually consults with the Office ahead of election.

Meanwhile, the elections director says the training of election workers is taking place, and his office has been receiving stationery.

Asked whether it would be all systems go if the elections were to be called now, Fisher would only say his team is working to ensure it will be able to properly conduct the polls.
