Prime Minister Andrew Holness this evening announced that the next general election will be held on Thursday, September 3.

Since 1944 when Universal Adult Suffrage was attained in Jamaica, 17 elections have been called.

Of that number, seven have been held on a Thursday.

Six were called on a Tuesday.

In Jamaica, voter turnout has consistently decreased since just before the turn of the century, except in the 2007 when it reached 61.46 per cent up from 59.37 per cent in the 2002 election.
