The electorate in St Mary South Eastern are turning out in large numbers in support of their candidates.
The Gleaner roamed the entire constituency, including the communities of Richmond, Epsom, Enfield, Annotto Bay, Iterbole, Scotts Hall, Broadgate, Castleton, Dover, Devon Pen, and Friendship Gap, where large groups of persons were spotted clad in the colours of the two main political parties outside the polling stations.
Polling stations in the mentioned communities all opened on time, at 7 a.m., without any major glitches.
However, while voting is proceeding without incident, a tense calm is prevailing at Annotto Bay Infant School, where supporters of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and the People's National Party (PNP), in their eagerness to cast their ballots, are not adhering to the protocols set by the Ministry of Health and the Electoral Office of Jamaica.
Supporters of both the JLP and the PNP are blatantly ignoring the safety practice of social distancing.
The incumbent Dr Norman Dunn, of the JLP, is going up against Shane Alexis of the PNP for the right to become member of parliament for St Mary South Eastern.
In 2017, Dunn defeated Alexis by 937 votes in a by-election.
Before that, in 2016, Dunn, who tallied 7,319 votes, lost to Winston Green of the PNP by five votes.
