Despite pain rocking her body, 72-year-old Cynthia Gallimore was determined to vote for the People's National Party (PNP) at the Whitfield Town All-age in St Andrew South West.
Not even a sharp rise in the spread of COVID-19 could stop the elderly resident who also has underlying conditions.
Ushered into the polling station in a wheelchair, Gallimore was allowed to go ahead of the line and voted within minutes.
"Whole body sick...high blood pressure," she said.
“Me love me party,” the senior citizen told The Gleaner, noting that she has been voting for the PNP since she turned 18.
“I am praying to the Lord that they win,” Gallimore said.
Using a walking stick to balance her steps, Sonia Campbell emerged from the Whitfield Town All-age School where she voted after 10 a.m. this morning.
“It was well quick and easy. Everything is here; you have the hand sanitiser and social distancing,” Campbell said.
The elderly elector who said she has a “spinal cord” problem told The Gleaner that the ailment could not stop her from coming out to vote.
Voting for the PNP since 1976, Campbell who lives in the Kingston 13 area for more than 40 years said: “I think we are coming home again”.
The votes were cast in St Andrew South West where the PNP’s Angella Brown-Burke is up against the Jamaica Labour Party’s Maureen Lorne.
Brown-Burke, the incumbent, succeeded former party president Portia Simpson Miller, who retired from representational politics. In a by-election held on October 30, 2017, Brown crushed the challenge of Victor Hyde, winning by 6,101 votes.
In the 2016 general election, Simpson Miller polled 10,792 votes to Hyde’s 702.
