New outdoor agent Monique Walker is looking forward to her job of getting people to vote for the People’s National Party (PNP), which she believes is the party “for the people” and the best choice for Jamaicans at this time.

Walker grew up in Seville Heights in St Ann North Eastern with her grandmother, who was a staunch PNP supporter, and fell in line supporting the party. She has no regrets.

Over the years, she became quite familiar with the work of outdoor agents, and this year, she is making her debut as one. It’s a job she considers very important.

“As outdoor agent, what we’re doing now, we have a [copy of the] voters’ list, where we go around and encourage persons to go out and vote. We let them know where inside the polling station they are to go, and stuff like that,” Walker explained.

She said that the response to her approaches has been mixed. The older folks have been more receptive than the younger voters, but she keeps working on them.

“The younger people, we have to get them out there, let them know that we are working on things for the young people in the community, to get them out to go and vote for Mr Keith Brown,” she told The Gleaner.

The PNP’s Brown will face off with the Jamaica Labour Party’s Marsha Smith for the St Ann North Eastern seat next week.

The JLP, through Shahine Robinson, who passed away in May, has held the seat since 2001.

Walker said that the current state of affairs in the country has made her job even more important.

“We need the best for our country. We need our party to win this because as far as I’m seeing, the ruling party now, they’re only for themselves. We need somebody for the people, and the PNP is for the people,” she said.

“The ruling party, they have not been doing anything for the young people in North East St Ann. We need more opportunities for the young people; help them to get work, get them off the street, put them in a little programme. We need stuff like that in North East St Ann. I’m not seeing that from the ruling party, which has the seat down here.”
