THE EDITOR, Madam:

I would like to congratulate Mark Golding for a very well-planned, spirited and emphatic win over a strong campaigning team marshalled by Lisa Hanna. Now that the dust has settled, I do hope the party can come together and give the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) a strong run for their money. A united People’s National Party (PNP) with every single member playing an integral part in ending this constant divisiveness, hence, reaping the requisite end that we so envisioned in the next general election. The first thing the party can do in the healing process is to forget about past differences. The party should work towards strengthening their base

The party members have lost the zest and utmost trust in one another, because there have been some very unpleasant leadership battles in the past which have cost the party dearly. What the PNP will have to do is to have the values and attitudes to go for the big prize by building a strong unit again. It would have been nice if the party could exercise more caution when it campaigns against each other in these leadership races. The same things that the party people say about one another can be used to their detriment in future campaigns against the Comrades.

I have seen where the party members can once more fight less futile battles and/or gain less pyrrhic victories like in the last election. The party had too many casualties in the last general election, which was caused by their own infighting. They should come together and build a strong party. The PNP would have to make Norman Manley, Michael Manley, Percival J. Patterson, Portia Simpson Miller and Dr Peter D. Phillips proud.

This can be achieved with the stewardship of the new party president, Mark Golding.
