THE EDITOR, Madam:

Lisa Hanna is clearly the front runner to be the leader of Opposition in the House, the only other person could be Julian Robinson; Mikael Phillips should chair the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament. Mark Golding can be ruled out as leader of Opposition because he doesn’t have the numbers. Only Angela Brown Burke, Hugh Graham and Luther Buchanan (if he’s elected MP) would support Golding.

The new leader of the Opposition will have an uphill task as the Government has 49-14 seats, which is over a two-thirds majority.

On the other hand, Peter Bunting is a strong contender to become the People’s National Party (PNP) president, and so is Damion Crawford.

The issue with Peter Bunting and Damion Crawford is that if they become president, which seat would they contest? I don’t see Peter Bunting going back to Manchester Central, he may try for the seats of Lothan Cousins or Luther Buchanan. Damion Crawford could contest for Dr Peter Phillips’ seat, Wykeham McNeill’s seat or even replace Imani Duncan-Price in Kingston Central.

The next leader of the People’s National Party will have to spend a lot of time in renewing their party’s machinery.

PARTNERSHIPS

These are interesting times ahead for the PNP, because a Lisa Hanna and Damion Crawford partnership may not be a bad idea, but a Lisa Hanna and Peter Bunting partnership may not work.

I hope that the Jamaica Labour Party doesn’t believe that power is from legislation only, because power is also in the streets. I hope the Government doesn’t become arrogant, because they have the majority, and pass some unpopular legislation which could be detrimental to the support that the ruling party has.
