A far cry from the bloodshed that has plagued the area in the past, the West Kingston constituency experienced calm, peacefulness on Election Day morning.
While the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) dominated area was flooded with green-clad voters, People's National Party (PNP) supporters who were donning their orange paraphernalia were not treated with any animosity.
The 1980 General Election would not have facilitated this harmonious coexistence. Over 800 people were killed in that election year in politically-motivated murders.
Since then the political violence has steadily decreased in the area.
One PNP outdoor agent at the Chetolah Mel Nathan Education Centre, says she has no animosity with any of her family members or friends, who supports the other party. She maintains that she will never switch allegiance regardless of the fact that West Kingston is a JLP stronghold.
Most polling stations in the constituency had a steady flow of voters by 8:00 a.m. with the exception of stations at Chetolah Mel Nathan Education Center and Diocese of Jamaica & the Cayman Islands, which were experiencing slower numbers.
Electoral Office of Jamaica supervisor at Diocese of Jamaica & the Cayman Islands, Joan Myrie, said she expects the numbers to pick up soon, as most voters live around the area.
