The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) says it will convene a press conference later this week to update the country on its readiness for the general election on February 25.

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller last night announced the election date, triggering the roll-out of the country's election machinery.

Director of Elections, Orrette Fisher told The Gleaner/Power 106 News Centre this morning that he will be meeting with the Electoral Commission of Jamaica as soon as possible.

He says following that meeting, a press conference will be called to outline the EOJ's activities leading up to the polls.

The EOJ had initiated training of thousands of workers in anticipation that the general elections would have been called by December last year.

The election body had also noted then that it needed up to $1.6 billion to successfully carryout the polls.

The upcoming general elections will be conducted using the last voters' list published by the EOJ on November 30 last year.

Based on the list, there are 1,824,410 Jamaicans registered to vote.
