Economic Hurricane To Hit Jamaica - Chuck

Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Member of Parliament Delroy Chuck has declared that an “economic hurricane” is about to hit Jamaica.

According to Chuck, the parliamentary representative for St Andrew North East, this is the reason the governing People’s National Party (PNP) is moving to hold general election months before it is constitutionally due.

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller is widely expected to announce the date for the elections tonight. General elections are constitutionally due in December.

However, Chuck charged that the PNP is forced to call elections in February because of what he described as an “economic hurricane” on the horizon.

To justify his claim, he said J$62 billion in maturing money from the National Debt Exchange is set to come on stream next month.

“When that comes back into the banking system the [Jamaican] dollar is going to go up, up, up,” he asserted.

In addition Chuck, who is also the JLP spokesman on justice, said approximately US$800 million in interest payments become due next month.

“When those two economic hurricanes hit Jamaica, believe me… So they are forced to call it now because when that hurricane hit them is trouble in the land” he said.

“So Labourites there is going to be an election and we can win it, we must win to save Jamaica,” he added.
