Trade Unionist Weighs In On JLP's Income Tax Proposal

Veteran trade unionist and President of the National Workers Union (NWU), Granville Valentine, is claiming that the personal income tax proposal put forward by the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) will result in massive layoffs.

Valentine says the proposal is not workable and will be bad for employment in the country.

The JLP has proposed that if it forms the government persons who earn up to $1.5 million will not pay income tax.

The threshold is at $592,800.

The party has also proposed to increase the national minimum wage from $6,200 to $8,200.

The proposal has received mixed reactions from some Jamaicans.

Speaking at People’s National Party mass rally in Three Miles in St Andrew last night,  the NWU President argued that if the JLP’s proposal is implemented it will result in more Jamaicans joining the unemployment line.

He charged that voters should reject the proposal and reject the JLP at the polls
