Floyd Morris Calls For Disabled Community To Support PNP

Floyd Morris, the first blind person to be elected president of the Jamaican Senate, has appealed to the disabled community to support the People's National Party (PNP) in next week's general election.

Morris, who has been speaking at various campaign meetings of the PNP across the island, said that the party believes in empowering people with disabilities.

"I am proud to be a beneficiary of the People's National Party's policies," Morris declared in Papine, St Andrew, on Wednesday night.

"In 1989, when I got blind, I never knew that one day I would be able to sit in the Parliament of Jamaica to participate in debates and discussions for the advancement of Jamaica," Morris said.

The Bailey's Vale, St Mary-born Morris, who began losing his sight during high school and who lost it fully six years later, became the first blind member of the Senate when he was appointed in 1998.

He said that it was because of the policies of the PNP that he has been able to complete bachelor's and master's degrees and is now on his way to a PhD.

"I say glory to the People's National Party!" he said.

Morris said the passage of the Disabilities Act by Parliament in 2014 speaks volumes about the PNP's commitment to assisting people with disabilities.

The act, according to Morris, will affect the lives of more than 400,000 people with disabilities.

"I want to say to every disabled person in Papine and across Jamaica that the People's National Party is the party that protects and empowers people with disabilities, and we must go out on February and vote for the People's National Party," he said.

The PNP, in its election manifesto, has promised to create a disabilities tribunal to adjudicate complaints of discrimination against persons living with disabilities.
