Holness Says He Will Not Apologise To Simpson Miller

The Opposition Leader Andrew Holness has rejected a request by People's National Party president, Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller to apologise for alleged defamatory comments he made against her.

This morning Simpson Miller's attorney Bert Samuels said he was yet to receive an official response from Holnesss since his February 7 letter demanding the apology.

Shortly after, in a letter Holness' attorney George Soutar told Samuels that the Jamaica Labour Party leader is insistent that he has not defamed the Prime Minister.

The letter says the statement in question was a direct response to comments made by Simpson Miller on February 7 which sought to demean Holness and destroy his reputation. 

Soutar also said since the Prime Minister made these defamatory comments in relation to Holness, he was entitled to vigorously defend himself.

As a result Soutar says the Opposition will not apologise for the statements, nor will he pay the requested damages.

Holness' attorney also says he will vigourously defend any claim brought by Simpson Miller and file a counterclaim.
