Published in the Jamaica Gleaner : Wednesday | September 5, 2007
The post-election period for Jamaica continued to be filled with acts of criminality and indiscipline, as gunmen roamed sections of the Corporate Area, brandishing and utilising their weapons.
The curfew in the Mountain View area had been extended to 6 o'clock this morning.
Police reports indicate that several areas were the scenes of sporadic and at times sustained gunfire, as criminal elements continued into yesterday the trend which began after the results were announced election night.
Opted to stay indoors
Several residents opted to stay indoors and avoid the streets. Areas affected include Olympic Gardens, Greenwich Town, Tower Avenue, Whitfield Town, Tavares Gardens, Maxfield Avenue and Whitfield Town, all in St. Andrew.
A statement from the Police High Command said they have been working in conjunction with the Jamaica Defence Force to maintain the peace and, as part of their post-election planning, have additional personnel on standby.
Police Commissioner Lucius Thomas said he had consultations with the leadership of both parties in an effort to curb illegal activities from both sets of supporters
