Yesterday's display by members of the island's security forces was a clear indication that the lawmen are ready for any eventualities that may occur during the upcoming general election.
The heavily armed lawmen were kept busy, closely monitoring the arrival and departure of candidates and throngs of supporters.
"We provided escorts and prevented a number incidents that could have been confrontational," said Assistant Commissioner Owen Ellington, who is in charge of operations.
For example, in the hotbed of Central Kingston, where a policeman was shot and injured by gunmen yesterday, police personnel were observed walking in the midst of the groups along South Camp Road to ensure that law and order were maintained.
At the nomination centres, Jamaica Defence Force soldiers, members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Island Special Constabulary Force were strategically positioned. Only persons with legitimate business were allowed inside.
"Today's (yesterday's) exercise tested the readiness of the management team and we are satisfied," ACP Ellington said.ACP Ellington said the soldiers played an integral role by assisting with patrolling the hot spots and responding to emergency calls.
While some were manning the nomination centres, others were monitoring the flow of traffic or doing regular duties. Scores were also at various locations waiting for instructions to support colleagues who might have come under heavy gunfire. For the past two general elections, the security forces have been commended for their performance
